HDMI is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video connection. HDMI provides the best interface between a DVD player and compatible products, such as a digital television (DTV). When matched with a compatible TV, this single interconnecting cable combines: Multi-channel audio, uncompressed digital video, intercommunication between devices and simple control Protocols. This single cable connection ensures that all signals remain in their pure digital form and secure by use of High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP) regardless of signal output resolution. The SD4980 also has component, S-Video and RCA-video connections if you don't have an HDMI connection on your television. minimize

Strengths:Great picture, ease of use
Weaknesses:Must use remote to see chapter numbers
Posted Dec 12, 2005 - I bought this DVD player to take advantage of the HDMI upconversion for use with a Sony HDTV. I am using the HDMI for video and the optical connection for audio. There is definitely an improvement in the picture quality in HDMI mode. It only took about 10 minutes to get this player up and running. It is also easy to navigate the setup screens with the remote.
My only complaint is that you have to use the remote to see the chapter numbers. They only flash on the indicator for about two seconds, but you can use the remote to see the chapter number while the movie is running by using the display button on the remote.
Overall, I think this is a great player at a very reasonable price. I would recommend it for anyone wanting a sharper picture for DVDs on their HD displays.
It is not as good as a regular HDTV signal, but it is much better than regular DVD quality.

Strengths:Overall a Good Unit
Weaknesses:Cannot Play DivX Files on DVD
Posted Jan 20, 2006 - I was overall happy with this player however it only plays DIVX files when they are on CD (according to the Manual). Some individuals have written reviews stating that this player can play DIVX files stored on DVDs, however I went through 10 discs (tried a number of different setting with NERO) and was unable to achieve this. Furthermore the File Selection Menu displays very few characters, hence you must keep your files names very short.
I ended up returning this player and purchased the LG LDA-530 instead (the LDA-531 offers upconverting if you need it). This player easily played DIVX files on DVD+/- and DVD-RW, it also offers a really nice file menu that shows longer files names. I instantly fell in love with this player, and would highly recommend that anyone interested in burning and playing DIVX buy LG instead.

Strengths:Sleek design. HDMI support. Great picture quality. Operates fast. Blue light.
Weaknesses:Lack's Sony's ability to read damaged discs as well. Blue light.
Posted Jan 16, 2006 - Toshiba is a brand name you can trust. They've popped out with this great looking, light weight dvd player with an excellent remote control.
It's compatible with HDMI which is great for the future when you get that plasma ;-)
The dvds play great in the 4980. The only left to say is that if the blue strip of light is annoying/distracting to you, then you look elsewhere. Otherwise... for under $100, pretty good deal.

Dont Buy
Strengths:Cool Blue Light, Easy to set up, HDMI connection
Weaknesses:Does not play +R dvds, DIVX menu sucks
Posted Jan 22, 2006 - If your only playing store bought dvds, this player probably is ok. If your planning on playing divx files dont buy this, The menus suck, does not play anything well when using +R discs

Good picture, when it works!
Strengths:HDMI picture is very good
Weaknesses:Poor construction
Posted Nov 28, 2005 - This one is going back. The picture "shorts out" and you're stuck with an alternating blue or green screen. I believe it to be isolated as Toshiba is not known for making junk, however I would not recommend this paticular model.

Stupendously retarded design
Strengths:Looks very cool with neon blue ground effects. Works great if you can cover it up or if you only watch TV in a well lit room.
Weaknesses:Front features a 4” long bright blue LED strip
Posted Oct 17, 2005 - If you want a 5” long bright blue LED light competing with your TV for your movie viewing pleasure then this unit is for you! Only buy this unit if you plan to keep it behind a closed entertainment center cabinet door or if you only ever watch TV in a well lit room.
