5 Star Review A Perfect Fit

Strengths:

Low-profile speaker bar, great sound, HDMI and digital audio home theater control

Weaknesses:

Remote control not universal

Posted May 8, 2008 - I tried several 2.1 speaker systems to enhance the sound from our LCD HDTV. The 2.1 speaker systems used the RCA audio output from the TV but I was never satisfied with the quality of the sound, even from the Bose Companion system. I think part of the problem is with the low-level output of the TV’s RCA audio connection and for this reason I decided to look for a speaker system that could take advantage of my HDTV’s digital optical audio output connection. I also didn’t want to have a five-speaker system all around the room and so I focused my search on soundbar-type systems. The Sony HT-CT100, just recently introduced, fit the bill perfectly and comes at a price much lower than the Yamaha and Philips soundbar systems with optical inputs. The Sony HT-CT100 produces great sound. The speaker bar is very low profile and takes up very little space whether you sit it in front of the TV or hang it on the wall. The subwoofer is large (about the size of a desktop PC) and sits on the floor. The subwoofer has a nice display along the top edge of the box to tell you the various system settings. Best of all, the 200 watt amplifier (built-in to the subwoofer) has multiple HDMI and optical audio inputs and acts as the control center for a complete home theater/sound system. This was an unexpected bonus -no need for a separate home theater receiver. Just plug your satellite system, DVD player(s), game consoles, etc. right into the HT-CT100 and control everything from the remote. It’s an elegant solution and I haven’t seen anything else quite like it. Since the system takes in digital video/audio directly, you get to enjoy full Dolby Digital surround sound. The system can belt out remarkable volume levels and rich, deep bass. The speaker bar has left, right, and center channel speakers along with the remote control IR sensor. The Sony remote supplied with the system will control all your Sony components; however, if your HDTV, DVD player(s), etc. are not Sony brand (like mine), then be prepared to buy a universal learning remote in order to program the HT-CT100 commands. While I can decipher having several remote controls, I prefer to use a single remote control so that my family has an easier time turning on the TV or watching DVDs. The price of the Sony soundbar system is very reasonable considering its power output and multiple digital video/audio inputs to control your home theater. The quality is impressive (though I did have to return my first system due to a soundbar speaker buzz –my second system is flawless) and it looks and sounds like high-end gear. When I shop for items like this, I look at features, quality, and price without regard to the brand. In this case, Sony simply has a product that works great and provides an elegant solution for those wanting home theater sound in a low-profile package. It’s a winner.

5 Star Review Great product and good value

Strengths:

Easy connectivity and very little cables with HDMI connections

Weaknesses:

Surrond sound is not the strongest.

Posted 1 year ago - Very good sound quality out of a single bar, good strenth out of the subwoofer, perfect for our bedroom (15x20) I have it connected to a HDMI cable box, HDMI Sony DVD player and it works great, plugged it in and all worked perfectly. Like any other sorround sound coming out of the speakers on the bar, the surround effect is not the best but it does have very good clarity. I would definately recomend.

4 Star Review Excellent Sound System and Reciever

Strengths:

3 HDMI Inputs Optical Audio Connection Small Compact Footprint Sound Quality Style and Design

Weaknesses:

No Component Inputs/Output No Backlit Remote

Posted 1 year ago - My living room has hardwood floors so I cannot have cables strewn everywhere and I cannot use cable concealing methods on my hardwood floors. I am using this in conjunction with my KDL-46Z4100 Sony Bravia 46" LCD TV and believe you me it is great!!! I cannot have a full home theater experience due to the fact that my kitchen, living room, and informal dining room are all in the same space in my townhouse. This unit is the centerpiece of my "modified" home theater experience and I simply love it. The installers professionally installed it along with my TV, stand, Playstation 3, FiOS cable box, and Wii and since I am using HDMI for everything except the Will there are very little cable clutter and it is so discrete. I would truly recommend this for anyone in my situation who cannot enjoy a full home theater experience and who don't want speakers hanging from their ceilings, crown moldings, etc. This system is great especially with another Sony product such as a TV because the Bravia Link is incredible one remote to control everything except for the Playstation 3 and the Wii. Listening to Blu-Ray DVDs as well as conventional DVDs is incredible I mean the sound coming out of this unit is unbelievable. I still haven't quite figured it out as of yet but you can listen to 5.1 sound when it comes to cable but it defaults to 2.1 which is quite good but I have to figure how to get 5.1 from my FiOS cable box for the big UFC fight this weekend :) The remote looks intimidating at first but you get use to it rather quickly and with the Bravia Link it is even simpler to use. Playstation 3 video game audio and Blu-Ray is simply wonderful at full 5.1 surround sound. The remote isn't backlit so that is a drawback but the unit came with a fiber optic audio cable which is great that saved me some money. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who don't want a huge hulking sound system and it is easy to move and take apart to transport it to say a guest room etc...

5 Star Review Great Sound for Hearing Impaired

Strengths:

Great sound fills room, without being louder.

Weaknesses:

Cluttered remote control, difficult to find relevant buttons.

Posted 1 year ago - Great sound fills room, without being louder. My Hearing impaired parents would turn TV sound to high for my ears and still could not hear. Now they hear clearly, at a sound level comfortable for me. The sound fills almost the whole 2,800 sq ft house yet is comfortable to listen to 5-10 feet away.
